518: Correction and an update on THE OTHER East Greenbush project

There are outdoor venues with lights

Hi friend, my sincere apologies for misstating that the proposed East Greenbush courts would be the only large municipal venue with lights. I have since learned that Saratoga Spring's East Side courts have lights and the Crandall Park courts in Glens Falls have lights. Dang, I really blew that one.

I've played at East Side many DAYS but never at night. I had even checked Google Street View prior to publishing and didn't see any lights on the courts. (I saw lights on the fields, but not the courts.) Sorry I got that wrong.

I do make mistakes and I appreciate it when people let me know. Do not worry about hurting my feelings. I don't mind admitting my errors and I'm happy to fix them. So if there is an error that has been hanging around on the Pickleball518.com website for a while, let me know so I can make it right.

If you missed the last newsletter, here is the nutshell: Rensselaer Count is considering putting in 8 dedicated pickleball courts behind the County Office Building on Route 4. The proposal calls for lights, restrooms and vending equipment. You can send emails of support to county officials at:

Smclaughlin@rensco.com, Khoffman@rensco.com, Jcharette@rensco.com, Jgordon@rensco.com

And please attend the Aug. 6, 6 p.m., legislative meeting at the County Office Building at 99 Troy Rd. (Route 4), East Greenbush.

A thank you note from a Dr. Maggs' patient

This is an excerpt from a thank you note from a patient with knee pain to Dr. Tim Maggs, a Schenectady chiropractor who is a supporter of the Pickleball518 community. SPONSOR

"...I was desperate because I was leaving on a Mediterranean Cruise within 2 weeks, where we were celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary. I had many tours booked which required a lot of walking through Europe. After a thorough exam and x-rays, you developed an effective treatment plan. The plan included laser treatments and the leveling of my hips with orthotics. My scoliosis and hip replacements had apparently left one hip higher than the other when standing. I must admit at first I was skeptical. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the pain began to subside and I could walk again with minimal pain by the start of the cruise. You should know that after your therapy during my two weeks in Europe and walking on cobblestone streets at every port, I was able to do that with minimal pain. Throughout the cruise my stamina improved and I could participate in all tours with enthusiasm. Warmest regards, Mrs. Claudia Wolf"

Soft-opening on horizon for East Greenbush venue

Here's an update on the four-court venue being built near True Value in East Greenbush. It is moving forward! They are starting to pour the concrete. Owners Nancy Kupiec (also the builder) and Bernadette Bennett hope to have a soft opening by the end of the summer.

This is an entirely different kind of venue than the proposed county courts.

The plan is for four pickleball courts under a pavilion with soft enclosed walls. There will also be a garage and event venue. The project sits on 2.5 acres next to the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail that is part of the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile bike path that runs from New York City to Buffalo.

This is a great spot for private games, lessons and pickleball weddings!

This would be a great addition to the local pickleball community as well as the county courts!

Pickleball connections in Florida?

Matt Haag, a pickleball friend, coach and ambassador from Saratoga Springs is moving to Florida. He sent a note to his pickleball students and friends hoping for help getting plugged into the Sarasota, Florida pickleball scene:

As I settle into Sarasota, one of my priorities is to continue coaching and sharing this game we love. Since I don’t yet have a local network there, I’d be incredibly grateful if you’d connect me with friends, family, or colleagues in the Sarasota area who play pickleball or are interested in learning. A simple introduction would mean the world as I begin building new relationships and establishing myself as a coach in a new community. For those of you who I’ve worked with recently, you’ve noticed my sons have also started coaching lessons! They are excited to keep growing as players and junior coaches in Florida.

If you know folks in the Sarasota area, you can connect them with Matt at Haagm58@gmail.com

That's all for now. Hope to see you on the court,

Cathleen

#060 July 31, 2025 | Read on the web Can a 3.9 player can play in a 3.5 event? The answer is "Yes" in a PickleballTournaments event. I've had a few questions about the skill divisions for the Oct. 4 Bethlehem Pickleball Tournament. Parsing skill divisions is always a struggle especially within the PickleballTournament ecosystem. PickleballTournaments rounds down . So a 3.9 player is considered a 3.5 player, therefore a "Doubles 3.5 and under event" actually means it is for players 3.99999 and...

The plan calls for the courts to have lights, which would make it the only large outdoor court venue in the region with night-time play. Woot, woot. Also in the plan are permanent bathrooms and vending...
